David Hockney Hotel Acatlan: Second Day (M.C.A.T 270)

Hotel Acatlán: Second Day (1984) is a lithograph by David Hockney and the second print in a sequence inspired by an unexpected stop during his journey through Mexico. While travelling to attend his exhibition Hockney Paints the Stage in Mexico City at the Museo Rufino Tamayo, Hockney’s car broke down near the town of Acatlán, leading him to stay at the small Hotel Romano Angeles. The unexpected pause became an artistic opportunity, inspiring a series of drawings later transformed into lithographs that capture the atmosphere, architecture, and vibrant colour of the Mexican setting.

  • About David Hockney Hotel Acatlan: Second Day

In Hotel Acatlán: Second DayDavid Hockney presents the same location depicted in the earlier print Hotel Acatlán: First Day, but from a different viewpoint. The composition focuses on the front perspective of the hotel, emphasising its architectural features and the surrounding landscape. Red brick arches, tall columns, and a sweeping blue portico frame the scene, while lush plants and cacti evoke the distinctive vegetation of the region. Sunlight fills the courtyard, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Hockney’s vivid palette of reds, greens, and blues reflects the colours often associated with Mexican architecture and landscapes. Through careful arrangement of forms and colour, the artist draws the viewer into the space, creating the impression of standing within the courtyard and experiencing the environment firsthand.
