'View of Hotel Well I is an extension of his Hotel Acatlan prints in the series, which explore the remote hotel in Mexico that Hockney came upon by chance, when his car broke down en route to one of his own exhibitions in Mexico City.'
David Hockney’s View of Hotel Well I, 1985 is a signed lithograph print from his groundbreaking Moving Focus Series. View of Hotel Well I is an extension of his Hotel Acatlan prints in the series, which explore the remote hotel in Mexico that Hockney came upon by chance, when his car broke down en route to one of his own exhibitions in Mexico City.
However, in this three-part sequence, Hockney depicts the inner courtyard of the obscure Mexican hotel through his wide lens perspective: fitting with the rest of the Moving Focus series, in which Hockney worked with visionary printmaker, Kenneth Tyler, the artist experimented with new techniques to explore space and stance. Through his static position looking into the interior courtyard of the hotel through a portico that is suspended by the blue wooden pillars (also seen in Hotel Acatlan), Hockney uses unexpected proportions and shapes to create a sense of motion that challenges our perspective of the hotel interior.
Interestingly Hockney created this print at around the same time he had a new hearing aid fitted, which gave him a renewed sense of spaciality that had been muted by his hearing loss. He commented, ‘‘Music is more alive again and sounds seem spatial, and made me think that over the last years to compensate for my muffled ears I developed a strong visual space sense I say this because I’m very aware I seem to see in another way that has to do with noticing movement of the eye (time) and perception of space’.
Hockney uses vibrant colour – verdant greens, bright blues, blood reds – along with abstract shapes depicting trees, cacti leaves, a red brick archway – that depict the serene nature of Mexico itself rather than a particular place. As Hockney said himself about the prints, ‘it’s not just about a hotel.’
