    David Hockney Rain (M.C.A.T. 128)

Rain (1973) is one of the most celebrated prints from The Weather Series by David Hockney. Produced during a period of technical experimentation, the work demonstrates Hockney’s innovative approach to printmaking and his fascination with representing atmospheric phenomena. The series was developed in collaboration with the renowned print workshop Gemini G.E.L. and reflects Hockney’s engagement with both modern techniques and historical artistic traditions. In particular, the print draws inspiration from the Japanese woodblock tradition known as Ukiyo-e, which influenced the artist’s approach to pattern, movement, and the stylised depiction of natural elements.

  • About David Hockney Rain

In RainDavid Hockney transforms a familiar weather phenomenon into a bold and immersive visual experience. The composition is dominated by a vibrant blue palette, across which diagonal lines suggest falling rain. Rather than depicting rain in a conventional naturalistic manner, Hockney represents raindrops striking the ground as a series of concentric circular ripples, creating a rhythmic pattern across the surface. This stylised treatment reflects the influence of Ukiyo-ewhile also demonstrating the artist’s experimental approach to printmaking. By combining lithography with screenprinting at Gemini G.E.L., Hockney developed new techniques that allowed ink to move and spread across the surface. The result is a dynamic, atmospheric composition that immerses the viewer in the sensory experience of rainfall.
