    Deux by David Hockney, 1990, is a signed lithograph in colours, one of an edition of 35, and the second in the Eine, Deux, Tres series. Similarly to the first part, Eine, Hockney explores abstraction, fragmented image based on cubist styles with a starting point of nature but in a lighter colour palette than the first part.
    Inspired by his work in set design, the composition is based on an abstract form, yet is two dimensional created on a flat background form. All the geometric shapes, curving lines and jagged forms intertwine to create a sense of volume and space that skewers the viewers perspective. We can decipher the lake, riverbed and grass scrubs at the front of the picture represented as dots, jagged edges and sweeping lines.
    Deux is part of the Eine, Deux, Tres series in which Hockney paid homage to famed artistic movements in particular Picasso’s cubist images and townscapes painted by French painter, George Braques, who displayed much more of a construction of composition than his contemporaries.  In fusing abstraction with elements of realism and nature, Hockney created his own interpretation of the cubist form for a contemporary generation.
