David Hockney Tres (Part 3) (M.C.A.T 331) For Sale

Tres (End of Triple) (1990) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney and the final work in his Eine, Deux, Tres trilogy. Created during a later phase of his career, the series reflects Hockney’s continued exploration of abstraction, perception, and spatial construction. Building on the fragmented visual language of the preceding prints, Tres presents a more intense and immersive composition through its richer colour palette. While rooted in observations of the natural world, the image resists clear definition, instead offering a layered and shifting interpretation that challenges traditional ideas of landscape and perspective.

  • About David Hockney Tres

In Tres (End of Triple)David Hockney combines geometric abstraction with subtle references to a landscape setting. Beneath the layered forms, hints of a lake or river emerge, with small boats and a suggestion of a fence providing fleeting moments of recognisable detail. These elements are partially obscured by a dominant arrangement of angular shapes, sweeping lines, and dotted textures that echo the compositions of the earlier prints. The deeper reds and blues intensify the visual experience, creating a sense of depth and immediacy that shifts as the viewer’s eye moves across the surface. The composition appears both structured and fluid, balancing controlled design with expressive mark-making. This interplay encourages multiple readings, reinforcing Hockney’s interest in perception as an active and evolving process.
