‘Art has to move you and design does not…’ David Hockney

David Hockney’s A Picture of Two Chairs, 1985 is a signed lithograph, one of an edition of 60, from his groundbreaking Moving Focus series. Hockney worked on this series with master printer, Kenneth Tyler, who also helped pop art icon, Roy Lichtenstein evolve his visual language. In A Picture of Two Chairs, similarly to Lichtenstein, Hockney takes two humble chairs as his starting point and elevates them into the leading protagonists of his artwork.
A Picture of Two Chairs is part of the Moving Focus series in which Hockney explored non-linear forms of perspective and spatial awareness. In A Picture of Two Chairs (see also Pembroke Studio with Blue Chairs and Lamp, Conversation in the Studio) creates a box like framework around these two simple chairs that references cubist techniques: the background walls and floorboards are created by diagonal lines and jagged angles that distort the viewers perspective.
In A Picture of Two Chairs, Hockney sits the two comfy armchairs in the centre – unusually in this series, the artist depicts chairs with no human presence – by isolating the chairs he focuses ideas of friendship and intimacy on these inanimate objects. One is bright yellow, the other is monochrome, they are turned towards each other as if in a conversation, the viewer can only speculate at.
In Picture of Two Chairs, Hockney takes these modernist everyday objects and uses them as a intriguing narrative device: they become an enduring symbol of memory, time and human experience.
