  • Hockney Weather Series Mist

    David Hockney Mist (M.C.A.T 129)

Mist (1973) is a lithograph from The Weather Series by David Hockney. Produced in collaboration with master printer Kenneth Tyler at Gemini G.E.L., the series explores atmospheric conditions through innovative printmaking techniques. Created during Hockney’s early years in Los Angeles, the works reflect his fascination with the region’s light, landscape, and cultural imagery. In Mist, the artist combines iconic Californian motifs with references to historical artistic traditions. By merging lithography and screenprinting, Hockney developed a new visual language capable of capturing the subtle, transient qualities of weather and atmosphere.

  • About David Hockney Mist

In MistDavid Hockney depicts a row of palm trees emerging through a softly diffused atmospheric haze, a scene strongly associated with the landscape of Los Angeles. The composition appears deceptively simple, yet layered tones of pink, grey, and muted colour create depth and suggest the gentle movement of mist across the scene. Hockney produced the work using experimental methods developed with Kenneth Tyler at Gemini G.E.L., carefully building the hazy effect rather than applying it mechanically. The print also reflects a dialogue between Eastern and Western traditions, drawing on the atmospheric sensibilities of Ukiyo-e while subtly recalling the atmospheric landscapes of Claude Monet. Through this synthesis, Hockney transforms a familiar urban motif into a poetic meditation on weather and perception.
