Untitled No.516 is a digital print from an Ipad drawing, 2016, that was one of four artworks exhibited to accompany the launch of the 2017 seminal ‘visual autobiography’ A Bigger Book. A SUMO large scale monography by Taschen took the artist and his book editor over a year to finalise images from a creative oeuvre spanning over 60 years.

It is this digital print from Hockney’s groundbreaking Digital Drawing series (created by Apple Ipad the first year it was released) which is one of the four artworks that celebrate Hockney’s passions, still life and flowers, and merge them with new digital technology.

‘I’m convinced that technology and art go together - and always have for centuries,’ Hockney once commented: these Ipad still life depictions show his ability to advance his visual language with the benefits of technology yet to stay true to his artistic DNA.

Instead of the transparent vases of the other images, Hockney depicts this still life with flowers, through a ceramic vase atop a blue chequered tablecloth, holding a clustered assortment of flowers and ferns. The energetic vibrancy of the assorted bunch of verdant and violet florals is juxtaposed by a sparsely decorated backdrop; a pale red cross hatching and criss-cross blue tablecloth adds textural depth to the image with each viewing.

Hockney is unique in his ability to transcend art epochs; he takes the traditional still life genre and reinvents it with digital technology, yet it is still so recognisably a Hockney artwork. Untitled No.516 utilises unlimited colour ranges, speed of ‘brushstrokes’ as everything can be ‘undone,’ and contrasting materials to provide a timeless image that transcends generations of art enthusiasts.
