David Hockney Receiving The Inheritance (M.C.A.T 13)

Receiving the Inheritance is one of the early plates from A Rake’s Progress (1961–63), the celebrated series of sixteen etchings by David Hockney. Inspired by the narrative cycle A Rake’s Progress by William Hogarth, Hockney reimagines the eighteenth-century moral tale through the lens of a young artist navigating life in New York City. The series loosely reflects Hockney’s own experiences after travelling to the city in 1961. While retaining elements of Hogarth’s narrative structure, Hockney transforms the story into a modern, semi-autobiographical exploration of ambition, financial struggle, and identity, particularly within the context of a young gay artist seeking recognition.

  • About David Hockney Receiving The Inheritance

In Receiving the Inheritance, Hockney presents a scene that most closely echoes Hogarth’s original storyline, where the protagonist receives sudden wealth. In Hockney’s reinterpretation, however, the “inheritance” refers not to family fortune but to money earned through selling prints. The central figure, recognisable by his angular jawline and large glasses, resembles the protagonist introduced in The Arrival, suggesting a continuing narrative thread across the series. Opposite him sits a moustached figure widely believed to represent William S. Lieberman, the curator of drawings and prints at the Museum of Modern Art who purchased early works by Hockney. Through symbolic elements such as floating dollar signs, stark lines, and flashes of red, Hockney transforms a seemingly simple transaction into a poignant reflection on artistic ambition, financial precarity, and the emotional distance experienced by young artists in early-1960s New York.
