  • Hockney Meeting The Good People (Washington)

David Hockney Meeting the Good People (Washington) (M.C.A.T 14)

Meeting the Good People (Washington) is a signed and numbered etching by David Hockney from his celebrated 16-part series A Rake’s Progress (1961–63). Inspired by William Hogarth’s eighteenth-century narrative cycle, Hockney reimagines the story through a modern, semi-autobiographical lens. In his version, the ‘Rake’ becomes a young gay artist navigating life in the United States during the early 1960s. Created after Hockney’s first visit to America, the series combines personal experience with satire and symbolism. Through intricate etching and layered references, the artist reflects on ambition, identity, and cultural discovery while exploring themes of freedom, celebrity, and social power.

  • About David Hockney Meeting the Good People

Meeting the Good People (Washington) shifts the narrative of A Rake’s Progress from New York to Washington, D.C., where Hockney’s protagonist encounters monuments celebrating key figures in American history. The composition features recognisable landmarks including the Lincoln Memorial, a statue honouring Thomas Jefferson, and the distant Washington Monument. These symbols of national pride appear elevated and haloed, suggesting reverence for historical power and authority. Nearby stands Hockney’s ‘Rake’, identifiable by his glasses and distinctive hairstyle, quietly observing the scene. The artist introduces subtle irony by juxtaposing these celebrated monuments with a questioning outsider figure. Through satire and symbolism, David Hockney reflects on ideals of democracy, hero worship, and the contradictions within American cultural identity during the twentieth century.
