David Hockney Cast Aside (M.C.A.T 25)

Cast Aside (1963) is one of the final prints in A Rake’s Progress, the influential sixteen-etching series by David Hockney. Inspired by the narrative cycle created by William Hogarth, Hockney transforms the eighteenth-century moral tale into a modern, semi-autobiographical story about a young artist navigating New York in the early 1960s. Throughout the series, the ‘Rake’ figure reflects themes of identity, vulnerability, and social alienation. In Cast Aside, the narrative reaches a dramatic climax, using powerful symbolism and stark imagery to convey the emotional pressures and marginalisation experienced by those living outside accepted social norms.

  • About David Hockney Cast Aside

In Cast AsideDavid Hockney presents one of the most striking and symbolic images from A Rake’s Progress. The familiar ‘Rake’ character appears reduced in scale, shown only from the neck upward and grasped by a large disembodied hand. The figure is being thrust toward the open jaws of a menacing serpent, whose patterned body and sharp teeth dominate the composition. This dramatic confrontation suggests vulnerability and loss of control, emphasising the protagonist’s sense of powerlessness within an unforgiving social environment. Hockney contrasts the delicate monochrome line work of the figure with the bold, heavily patterned serpent, heightening the tension of the scene. Accents of vivid red ink, recurring throughout the series, reappear here as blood-like forms, reinforcing themes of conflict, sacrifice, and emotional turmoil.
