    David Hockney Bedlam (M.C.A.T 27)

Bedlam (1963) is the final etching in A Rake’s Progress, the influential sixteen-print narrative series by David Hockney. Inspired by the satirical cycle created by William Hogarth in 1753, Hockney reinterprets the story through the experiences of a young artist encountering New York for the first time in the early 1960s. The series traces the emotional and psychological journey of the ‘Rake’, a semi-autobiographical figure navigating identity, freedom, and social expectations. As the concluding image, Bedlam delivers a powerful and symbolic ending, reflecting both the protagonist’s personal disillusionment and Hockney’s growing mastery of narrative printmaking and visual storytelling.

  • About David Hockney Bedlam

In BedlamDavid Hockney presents a striking and symbolic conclusion to A Rake’s Progress. Five nearly identical figures stand in a row with their backs to the viewer, each wearing headphones and facing a bold red sign reading “BEDLAM.” These figures resemble the ordinary man introduced in Meeting the Other People, suggesting the dominance of conformity within mass society. Their uniform appearance and shared focus imply collective obedience and the loss of individuality. Through a pared-back composition and strong graphic elements, Hockney contrasts the ideals of freedom and self-expression with the pressures of social conformity. While William Hogarth concluded his original narrative with the protagonist confined to an asylum, Hockney’s modern interpretation replaces physical confinement with psychological and societal control, offering a powerful commentary on identity, conformity, and modern culture.
