Exhibition: Hirst from the Collection of Andipa: Andipa

"The goal in life is to be solid, whereas the way that life works is totally fluid, so you can never actually achieve that goal."
  • "I think I've always been afraid of painting, really. Right from the beginning. All my paintings are about painting without a painter. Like a kind of mechanical form of painting."

    • Andipa opened its London doors in Walton Street in 1969 and remains one of the key destinations for art collectors and buyers. Its family roots date back even further to the 16th century. Today, our actiities in modern and contemporary art specialise in original paintings and prints by famous artist, and those who make an impact in the world of art. Damien Hirst is one such artist.

    • Damien Hirst has established himself as the foremost Young British Artist whose legacy is destined to continue. His Pharmacy sale at Sotherby's in 2004 was expected to raise £3million , but in reality sold £11 millon. There is a significent increase in his popularity and for his prints and pictures. Exploring the nature of reality, death, detachment and rebirth - Hirst's works have taken on an almost phrophetic tone to the evolving nature of,  not just art, but the art market itself. Sanctum, Andipa's exhibition brings together Hirst in all his iconic glory. A holy trintity of dots, skulls and butterflies.

"I think art is good at looking back and looking forward. I don't think art is good at looking head-on. At the end of the day, people are more important than paintings."

Sanctum brings together the iconic works of Hirst and pushes, drags and propels the visitor through the conceptual works of the artist beautifully realised in a physical space. The mechical, robotic dot paintings give way to the spiritual, organic and natural world in the Butterflies before death, diamond encrusted of course, greets us. An ending or a new beginning, we wonder?

The show, now over 10 years old, still feels fresh - a quite remarkable feat one must say. The works, as recognisable as the name, have become ingrained within our popular conciosuness. The very conciouness that the  pieces have sought to challenge. After all these years are we closer to an answer to their meanings? Or, like ourselves, as we have grown and changed have, also, their meanings and symbols?

  • "Great art - or good art - is when you look at it, experience it and it stays in your mind. I don't think conceptual art and traditional art are all that different."
