David Hockney Spilt Ink
'No matter what the illusion created, it is a flat canvas and it has to be organized into shapes...' (David Hockney)
David Hockney’s Spilt Ink is an abstract composition that depicts the effects of spilt ink, through a melange of different graphic shapes, lines, and form that resemble his photographic collages of his early career. The artwork also references many of his earlier pre-occupations, including the spatial perspective and form of his Moving Focus series and the influences of the cubism movement, which threads through his entire oeuvre. The ink bottles in all their colour variations are depicted fallen on their sides, as the ink runs, forming different shapes and splodges. On each viewing, Spilt Ink becomes like an optical illusion: the ink bottles dominate the image with some even standing up like alien figures amongst a collage of dots, lines and abstract forms. In Spilt Ink Hockney draws on so many of the influences and innovations from his earlier series’, such as The Weather Series and Moving Focus, which worked with new printmaking techniques and continues to evolve them utilising digital technology. -
