13^th February 2021, Flowers in a Glass Vase, 2021 by David Hockney is an Ipad painting on wove paper, created during the second year of the global lockdown, from his kitchen table in the picturesque village of Beuvron-en-Auge, Normandy.

For the first time in this series, 20 Flowers and a Bigger Picture, Hockney gives this artwork a specific date as he spent the months of February and March observing flowers hit by the low sun of the changing seasons.

One of the series, 20 Flowers and Some Bigger Pictures, Hockney depicts a variation of the same still life flowers: consistent elements include flower species, type of vase and colour of tablecloth. However, through experimenting with colour, form and line, each image becomes an individualistic artwork imbued with as much as emotion as his human figures.

Hockney pays homage to the tropes of the traditional still life genre, a vibrant bloom of flowers, set against a solid burgundy background that reflect on the beauty of the natural world and a time of simple pleasures. However, Hockney reinvents his still life portrait by utilising the modern Ipad technology to create an image with an ‘unfinished’ touch, rather than the formality of the traditional still life artworks.
