In 16^th February 2021, More Flowers in a Glass Vase, 2021 David Hockney creates another depiction of his two favourite passions: still life and flowers, recreating a similar scene with each artwork in the 20 Flowers and Some Bigger Picture series, just altering colours, tones, shapes and textures.

In this artwork you can see the influences of surrealism on Hockney, as on closer inspection, he depicts the flowers as if floating in air, detached from the stems in the vase. The semi-transparent glass vase is situated on a bright blue gingham tablecloth, a shadow refracts from the vase of flowers, looming onto the table surface. In 16^th February 2021, More Flowers in a Glass Vase, the central still life flower image is set against a traditional solid burgundy background, similar to the other prints, in this recent series, from the forward thinking, octogenarian British artist.

The bouquet of flowers features red, verdant green, white, teal, floral buds depicted in abstract shapes, dots, splodges, which sit in the water filled vase: the Ipad drawing is elegant and traditional, a direct homage to the still life tradition embedded in the canons of art history, but obviously created through digital ‘brushstroke’ renderings. In that way, the artwork remains compelling to viewers, as Hockney evolves his visual language and discourse on the role of an artist in contemporary society.
