“Maybe everything isn’t always so fabulous in America. It’s time for some death. This is what’s really happening.”

Electric Chair (F&S II.83) is a screenprint produced by Andy Warhol in 1971 as part of his electric chairs series. This collection belongs to Warhol’s broader Death and Disaster series, which delves into the darker themes of the late twentieth century. Among Warhol’s works on death and disaster, the electric chairs series stands out as the most sombre, presenting an unmistakable symbol of death contrasted with Warhol’s garish Pop art colours, like yellow and blue, as it is barely distinguishable on the paper.

The Death and Disaster series emerged in 1962, influenced by Warhol’s collaborator Henry Geldzahler, who urged him to explore the sinister side of American life: “Maybe everything isn’t always so fabulous in America. It’s time for some death. This is what’s really happening.” In these works, Warhol skillfully captures the essence of death and violence, pervasive in the media at the time. He was intrigued by the American public’s morbid fascination with violence, seen in their avid consumption of media covering events like JFK’s assassination and the tragic deaths of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe. This tension between public obsession with violence and celebrity culture permeates Warhol’s entire body of work.
