Skulls (FS II.157) is a screenprint created by Andy Warhol in 1976, as part of his wider Skull series. This print comes as an edition of 50 and is signed and numbered. This print marks the darker subject matter than underlines most of Warhol’s artistic oeuvre: memento mori.

Here, Warhol gives a traditional art historical genre painting a Pop Art makeover. This print depicts a sketch of a skull, rendered in a mass of black lines. The series depicts a variety of different lighting shone over each of the four skulls, exploring the ways in which light can increase tension and drama within a screenprint. Warhol transposed blocks of colour below the skull, added cartoonish depth and texture.

Warhol’s assistant once commented that depicting a skull is ‘is to paint the portrait of everybody in the world.’ Therefore, this series marks a morbid reminder of the human condition - celebrities and normal people alike, we will all eventually reach the same fate…
