Skulls (FS II.158) is a screenprint by Andy Warhol, created in 1976 as part of his larger Skull series. This work, produced in an edition of 50, is signed and numbered by the artist. The print represents a shift toward the darker themes that permeate much of Warhol’s artistic oeuvre, particularly the concept of memento mori.

In this work, Warhol transforms a traditional art historical genre painting into a Pop Art masterpiece. The print features a sketch of a skull, intricately detailed with dense black lines. This print is the most realistic depiction of a skull. In this series, Warhol experiments with different lighting effects on each of the four skulls, using light to amplify tension and drama in the screenprints. He adds blocks of colour beneath the skulls, with vibrant greens and yellows contrasting sharply against the grayscale background and skull outline, representing the play of light.

Warhol’s assistant once noted that painting a skull is akin to creating a portrait of everyone in the world. Thus, this series serves as a stark reminder of the human condition: whether we are celebrities or ordinary people, we all ultimately face the same inevitable fate.
