Shoes (F & S. II 256)
‘I’m doing shoes because I’m going back to my roots. In fact, I think maybe I should do nothing but shoes from now on.’
Shoes is a screenprint created in 1980 and is part of Andy Warhol's Shoes portfolio. Warhol's decision to dedicate a portfolio to shoes reflects a deep affection for footwear that dates back to before his rise to commercial fame. Early in his career, Warhol worked as a fashion illustrator, and in the mid-1950s, he was commissioned by the shoe company I. Miller to create illustrated ads for the Sunday New York Times. His shoe drawings were whimsical, expressive, and undeniably stylish, often embellished with gold leaf and appliqué. His work was so distinctive that Women’s Wear Daily dubbed him "the Leonardo da Vinci of the shoe trade."
