Goethe (F & S. II 272)
"Through this portfolio, Warhol places Goethe amongst the likes of Mick Jagger and Sigmund Freud, reimagining figures both contemporary and historical alike within the Pop Art canon."
Warhol's Goethe portfolio,, produced in 1982, is a series of four prints with each portraying the poet and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a leading intellectual of Germany and a precursor to the Romantic movement. Warhol drew inspiration for these portraits from Goethe in the Roman Campagna, a famous painting by J.H.W. Tischbein which he encountered at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. In typical Warholian fashion, he reimagined not only a historical figure but also a classic painting, embedding both into the narrative of Pop Art history.
At first glance, Goethe, known for his intellectualism and Romantic outlook, may not seem to be a natural muse for Warhol, an artist known for his depictions of consumerism and celebrity worship. However, both artists were trailblazing for their time, advocating for artistic expression. Through this portfolio, Warhol places Goethe amongst the likes of Mick Jagger and Sigmund Freud, reimagining figures both contemporary and historical alike within the Pop Art canon.
