Hammer and Sickle (F & S. II 162)
"Rather than using the hammer and sickle to take a clear political stance, Warhol seems to treat them as neutral objects, drained of their revolutionary meaning."
Andy Warhol’s Hammer and Sickle is from a portfolio of four, created in 1976. It is a significant series that reflects Warhol’s ability to transform iconic political symbols into commercialised and aesthetically charged works. The portfolio contains four screenprints of the hammer and sickle in varying detail and shades, the symbols of the Soviet Union, depicted in Warhol's signature pop art style.
Warhol’s choice to focus on such loaded symbols suggests a potential commentary on the Cold War tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but in typical Warhol fashion, the images are often more ambiguous and less directly political than they might seem at first glance. The hammer and sickle represent the industrial working class (hammer) and the agricultural peasantry (sickle), symbolising the unity of these groups in communist ideology, specifically in Soviet Russia. Rather than using the hammer and sickle to take a clear political stance, Warhol seems to treat them as neutral objects, drained of their revolutionary meaning. This echoes his approach to consumer products like Campbell’s Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles. -
