    Andy Warhol’s Hammer and Sickle is from a portfolio of four, created in 1976 at the height of the Cold War. The print depicts an abstract Hammer and Sickle, the symbol of Communism, in abstract blocks of red, orange and black. Warhol’s work often thrives on ambiguity, and Hammer and Sickle is no exception. These symbols of the Soviet Union, reimagined in an array of vibrant reds and oranges and abstract compositions, create a sense of irony. This screenprint provokes questions around the role of symbolism in a commercially driven visual culture. Are these still powerful revolutionary emblems, or are they merely objects to be consumed like the commercial products Warhol famously depicted, such as a Campbell’s soup can? This print hints at Warhol’s fascination with the juxtaposition of capitalism and communism. The Communist hammer and sickle are presented in a way that mirrors the way capitalist culture presents products – bright, attractive, and reproducible.
