Hammer and Sickle (F & S. II 164)
"This print comments on the way symbols are stripped of deeper meaning and reduced to objects of visual or commercial appeal in a mass-market society."
Andy Warhol’s Hammer and Sickle is from a portfolio of four, created in 1976 at the height of the Cold War. The print depicts an abstract Hammer and Sickle, the symbol of Communism, in abstract blocks of red, grey and black.
To create this print, Warhol worked with screen-printing, a mass-production technique that allowed him to replicate images multiple times. The process echoes the idea of commercialism, where symbols, no matter how politically charged, are reproduced and commodified. In choosing the hammer and sickle, Warhol plays with the idea of consumerism even within political contexts. His work comments on the way symbols are stripped of deeper meaning and reduced to objects of visual or commercial appeal in a mass-market society, playfully contrasting ideas of Communism and Capitalism. This print can be seen as a commentary on how the West commodifies and depoliticises even the most powerful political symbols -
