Shadows (F & S. II 205)
"Warhol’s abstraction retains a mechanical, detached quality, aligning it more with his pop sensibilities."
Created in 1978-1979, Shadows is from a portfolio of screen-printed canvases, designed to be displayed together as an installation rather than as individual works. Shadows marks a departure from Warhol’s typical representational style, showing his interest in abstraction, which he didn’t often explore in his other major works. Unlike Warhol’s typical approach of using recognisable imagery from popular culture, Shadows is largely abstract, focusing on variations of shadowy forms rather than specific objects or figures. The shadows themselves were derived from photographs taken of a shadow cast by a maquette (model), but Warhol doesn’t provide context or a clear source of light. This makes the images open to interpretation.
Some critics see Shadows as Warhol’s response to the abstract expressionist movement, especially considering that Warhol emerged in the art world as a reaction to abstraction. However, unlike Jackson Pollock or Mark Rothko, Warhol’s abstraction retains a mechanical, detached quality, aligning it more with his pop sensibilities.
