    Created in 1978-1979, Shadows is from a portfolio of screen-printed canvases, designed to be displayed together as an installation rather than as individual works. Shadows is largely abstract, focusing on variations of shadowy forms rather than specific objects or figures, marking a divergence from Warhol’s usual subject matter of commercialism and celebrities.

    Warhol’s famous Factory studio in New York was central to his artistic process, and Shadows reflects the industrial, assembly-line approach to art that Warhol pioneered. While each canvas is unique in terms of colour and specific details, the production process — screen printing — is mechanical and repetitive. As with much of Warhol’s work, repetition is central to Shadows. The series plays with the concept of serialisation that Warhol explored in earlier works. However, in this case, the repeated image is a shadow — an ambiguous, elusive subject that contrasts with the concrete images in his other works. Each screenprint in the series presents the shadow in different colour combinations, creating a sense of both sameness and difference. This industrialised approach to art-making aligns Shadows with Warhol’s broader commentary on mass production, consumerism, and the commodification of art.
