    Meaning & History
Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it."

Before becoming a Pop Art icon, Andy Warhol started his career as a graphic artist. Throughout the 1950s, Warhol used his artistic talents to create advertisements for commercial goods, such as shoes and clothes. His early exposure to the art of capitalism left a lasting impact on his artistic practice. Given his background in the creation of bold visual advertising strategies, it seems to be no surprise that Warhol turned to the brash, bold, and eye-catching form of the Campbell’s soup can for inspiration. Warhol's Campbell's Soup artworks epitomize his artistic style, encapsulating his obsession with mass consumerism, capitalism, and the hypnotising advertising techniques. These all become recognisable motifs of his soup can series and introduce as theme that is central to Warhol’s practice – art is not separated from everyday commodities.

The Campbell’s Soup Can I series demonstrates Warhol’s ability to take down the elitist barriers of art historical understanding. What better way to make art that is approachable to the modern American masses by reappropriating a symbol of mass American life. He is poking fun at the highbrow standards of the art market, transforming the meagre soup can into a form of ‘high art’. He is making a commentary on commodities, suggesting a piece of art is just somewhat as much of a commodity as a soup can.
