Mao (F & S. II 97)
‘The only picture they have is of Mao Zedong. It’s great. It looks like a silkscreen.’ Andy Warhol
Fascinated by Mao’s cult-like status, Warhol was captivated by the ubiquitous presence of one of history’s most recognizable faces. This led to the creation of his 1972 Mao series. The vibrant colours and signature technique are unmistakably Warhol, echoing his approach in portraits of Hollywood stars. With playful colour choices, he hints at lipstick and eyeshadow on a figure of grave political authority, transforming Mao from a powerful dictator into a kitschy 1970s pop icon. The monumental, larger than life scale of each print reflects the grandiosity with which political figures are often portrayed and evokes the larger-than-life propaganda posters commonly used in China. Warhol’s application of this scale to Mao’s image is a satirical nod to the leader’s status and influence. Warhol strategically aligned the creation of his Mao series with President Nixon’s politically charged and widely publicised meeting with Chairman Mao Zedong in communist China in 1972, a historic event that ended years of diplomatic estrangement between the two nations. The series serves as a reflection of Warhol’s obsession with fame and celebrity. By employing one of the century’s most recognizable images—the portrait of Mao, which was extensively reproduced across China during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76)—Warhol highlights seemingly contradictory parallels between the influence of Communist political propaganda and the impact of advertising in a capitalist society. -
