    Meaning & History
Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it."

Andy Warhol saw the world differently to those around him. Rather than drawing inspiration from human emotions and experience as the Abstract Expressionists did, he turned to consumerism and mass production as the most accurate reflection of modern-day life. He saw the beauty in consumerist goods that were overlooked as commodities, and transformed them into a work of art. By doing this, perhaps Warhol wanted us to ask, “why is this not art?”. He drew out a legitimate artistic value in an object that was disregarded in its value as a commodity. Through his soup cans series, Warhol urges the viewer to question the status-quo of art, to redirect our attention to possibilities of art that surround us in unexpected areas, such as a soup can shelf in an ordinary supermarket. Warhol takes the ordinary and transforms it into something extraordinary.

The Campbell’s Soup Can I series demonstrates Warhol’s ability to take down the elitist barriers of art historical understanding. What better way to make art that is approachable to the modern American masses by reappropriating a symbol of mass American life. He is poking fun at the highbrow standards of the art market, transforming the meagre soup can into a form of ‘high art’. He is making a commentary on commodities, suggesting a piece of art is just somewhat as much of a commodity as a soup can.
