    This portfolio marks an intersection between art, celebrity and music.

    Andy Warhol’s Mick Jagger portfolio was created in 1975, complete with ten portraits of the eponymous iconic rockstar. This portfolio marks an intersection between art, celebrity and music, themes which Warhol returned to throughout his oeuvre, as seen in his Marilyn portfolio. An entirely opposite musician and historical figure was similarly immortalised by Warhol in his Beethoven series, a portfolio of works in four colourways created in 1987. 

    This print depicts Mick Jagger turned in profile as he laughs, looking to the side. This print stands out in the portfolio, showing a glimpse of the real Jagger behind his sultry stage persona. His face is outlined by blocks of colour, where half his profile is drawn in a more simplified sketch style.The hand-drawn elements overlaid on the photographic prints emphasise the collision between mechanical reproduction and personal artistic expression.

    The portfolio reflects Warhol’s belief that celebrity images are a product of mass media. By layering mechanical and manual techniques, Warhol plays with the idea of the “real” Mick Jagger versus his manufactured public image.
