Andy Warhol After the Party Print (F & S II.183) For Sale

After The Party is a screenprint published by the artist in 1979, released as part of Warhol’s book Exposures of the same year. 

This landscape screenprint depicts a photograph of a dinner table, with empty glasses, champagne bottles and cutlery. In keeping with the suggestive and aptly named title ‘After the Party’, the empty glasses suggest debauchery and hedonism, which the artist further hints by outlining them in neon colours. Through his characteristic vivacious style, Warhol is able to conjure up ideas of the happenings of last night that he leaves to the imagination. The artist frequented clubs such as Studio 54, but was also famed for hosting his own parties at his studio The Factory – which saw the likes of The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed and Liza Minelli through its doors and of course muses such as Edie Sedgwick. Here, however, the evening’s guests are anonymous, giving the image an enigmatic nature to the image.  

After the Party also pays tribute to one of Warhol’s foremost mediums – photography – and his near obsessive documenting of his everyday life through it. Warhol photographed people he met and anything that captured his interest, often later to paint them. The present work can be viewed as a kind of diary-like example.
