Apples (F & S. II 200)
"Warhol deconstructs the fruit, transcending simple representation."
Apples is a screenprint by Andy Warhol, created in 1979 as part of his Space Fruit: Still Lifes series. This piece showcases Warhol’s Pop Art reinterpretation of a cluster of apples, rendered in a vivid red hue against a bright yellow background, accented by blue shadows. Warhol masterfully uses colour as a vehicle for emotion, with each hue eliciting a distinct response. His saturated black-and-white images of Marilyn Monroe evoke morbidity and darkness, while the vibrant rainbow colours in Space Fruit inspire a playful, almost childlike joy. In Apples, Warhol explores the dimensionality of the fruit, portraying them in both two and three dimensions and emphasising their shadows and varied positions. Through this, he deconstructs the fruit, transcending simple representation.
