    Meaning & History
The Second Continental Congress selected the Bald Eagle as the U. S. National Symbol on June 20, 1782

Bald Eagle, part of Warhol’s Endangered Species portfolio, was commissioned by gallerists and environmental activists Ronald Feldman and Frayda Feldman, who wanted to bring attention to the plight of endangered animals to increase awareness about conservation efforts. The series was created at a time when society was becoming increasingly aware of the call for conservation, and how the destructive actions of humanity have consequences for these animals.

Bald Eagle depicts the emblem of America. Warhol closely crops the eagle, so the emphasis is on the profile of the Eagle. Its beak is curved and powerful, depicted in a blazing orange as the bird turns to the side, reminiscent to the iconic image of the Eagle on the official Great Seal of the United States. The bright yellow of the eagle’s eye is piercing and confronting; we are directly confronted with humanity’s effect on the environment. The head of the eagle stands out against it’s black feathers, standing out against the vibrant blue background. In a typical Warholian manner, gestural yellow and red lines dance around the Eagle, adding texture and dynamism. This print was made by Warhol’s signature screen printing technique, turning the Bald Eagle into a pop art legend. The bright and bold colours and confronting presence of the eagle demand our attention and to take notice to the plight of endangered animals.

This piece stands out from the others in the series, due to the status of the Bald Eagle as America’s national bird. Prior to this series, Warhol had established himself as a representation of American culture, capturing the essence of American consumer and celebrity culture. His art is quintessentially American. The Bald Eagle is arguably no different to that of a celebrity in the minds of Americans, as the symbol of the free nation is presented through this animal, printed as a signifier of patriotism. In this piece, this iconic animal is used to call to a whole nation of patriots to take action for endangered species.
