  • Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it."

Campbell’s Soup Cans I: Vegetable is a screen print created by Andy Warhol in 1968 which forms part of his iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans I portfolio containing ten flavoured soups produced by the American food company Campbell’s. Based on his original 1962 artworks, 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol returned to the iconic soup cans six years later, employing the innovative screen print technique to achieve a more precise reproduction. Consequently, the portfolio serves as an authentic representation of Campbell’s original design, and as close as one could get to the real thing. Throughout his career Warhol explored consumerism and our relationship with it. Inspired by everyday objects, Warhol took mass-produced items and elevated them to high art – blurring the lines between popular culture and more esoteric pursuits. Part of the enduring legacy of the portfolio is that Campbell's soup has become a go-to comfort food for many people. Whether it's a warm bowl of soup on a cold day or a quick and easy meal option, there's a flavour for every taste and occasion. This almost democratisation of food, more choice and easier access, can be seen in Warhol’s approach to democratising art through recognisable goods that would be familiar to millions of Americans.

Marked by simplicity and boldness in its colours, symmetry, and overall design, the print carries undertones of advertisement and the mass production of consumer goods. As a pinnacle of Warhol's artistic endeavours, the Campbell’s Soup Can embodies his deep-seated fascinations with the nuances of modern society. This series, alongside Campbell’s Soup II, comprises some of the most prized printed works in Warhol's extensive repertoire.
