Campbell's Tomato-Beef Noodle ( F & S. ii 61)
"Warhol’s soup cans series brought a breath of fresh air to an art market that was inundated with Abstract Expressionist artworks, which focused on craftsmanship and technique"
Andy Warhol took the ubiquitous Campbell’s soup can as inspiration for one of his iconic: Campbell’s Soup Cans II. This series was created in 1969, one year after his original soup cans series. Warhol printed these via a machine, which allows for a precise image, as close as possible to the real thing. This design removed Warhol’s touch altogether, creating a design that is purely processed and artificial. The print perfectly reconstructs the Campbell’s soup can, making it instantly recognisable through its logo and white and red colour. The soup can became an unlikely muse, transformed into a symbol of Warhol himself.
Warhol’s soup cans series brought a breath of fresh air to an art market that was inundated with Abstract Expressionist artworks, which focused on craftsmanship and technique. Moving away from the visceral, natural inspiration behind the movement, Warhol turned to the everyday for an artistic lightbulb moment. Warhol aimed to explore how art can reflect the everyday experience of American life, which to Warhol meant mass production, commerce, and consumerism. To Warhol, it was precisely the ordinariness of the Campbell’s soup can that made it so extraordinary. The sterile and manufactured nature of the soup can series caused controversy within the art market, which shows Warhol was successful in making us question what can constitute as ‘real’ art. In doing so, Warhol helped to make art more accessible to the masses, after all, it is easy to understand ‘art’ if the inspiration is sat in your kitchen cupboard.
