    Cantaloupes II is part of Andy Warhol’s Space Fruit: Still Lifes series, created in 1979. The screenprint highlights Warhol’s intentional and considered use of colour to enliven his images. In Cantaloupes, he contrasts the vivid orange of the fruit—an exaggerated hue compared to reality—against a pink background, complete with blue shadows. These complementary colours, located on opposite ends of the colour wheel, imbue the image with striking brightness.

    Warhol had embraced a vibrant palette since refining his Pop Art sensibility decades earlier, but it’s fascinating to observe how assured his use of colour had become in this later stage of his career. When viewing Space Fruits, one is immediately reminded of the artist’s most iconic depiction of fruit: the 1966 Banana, which became one of his most widely recognised works due to its association with the band The Velvet Underground.
