    Meaning & History
The world's most seductive perfume appears as though the bottle could be plucked up off the page and spritzed because its body glows in vibrant colour against a black gradient.

Chanel, a screen print from Andy Warhol’s Ads Series of 1985, demonstrates the immense impact that consumer culture had on his creative output. A bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume is shown in this print; Pink gestural lines draw attention to the bottle's stylish and modern form while using muted colours, in contrast to some of the other, louder prints in the Ads collection. Warhol exaggerates how the Chanel bottle came to represent luxury, sophistication, and consumerism, as the bottle stands alone amidst its dark, seductive background. By transforming a common consumer product into an artwork, Warhol commemorates this symbol of popular culture from the 20th century.

The opulent aroma of Chanel No. 5 virtually emanates from the screenprint. It appears as though the bottle could be plucked up off the page and spritzed because its body glows in vibrant colour against a black gradient. With its message in tune with the Chanel luxury brand, the bottle embodies the Warholian subject of consumerism striving for an impeccable, affluent (Americanized) lifestyle, tempting the masses to indulge in a fleeting taste of opulence. As the so-called distinctive smell of Andy Warhol's frequent inspiration Marilyn Monroe, Chanel No. 5 is still as well-known as his artwork, demonstrating that the Pop artist was acutely aware of the capitalistic culture he both deftly depicted and drew attention to with his screenprints. Warhol collected "semi-used bottles" and even had a bottle of Estee Lauder's "Beautiful" buried with him when he passed away in 1987. He saw perfume as a means to "take up more space.", making a bottle of Chanel no.5 an inevitable artistic muse for Warhol.

The work of art, which sums up Warhol's style as an illustrator, represents ready-made commercial objects and opulent lifestyles. The enduring qualities of Andy Warhol—vintage yet modern; trendy but understated; approachable but mysterious—are emblematic of his creative brilliance and expertise.
