    Meaning & History
"The portfolio is a visually striking exploration of the assassination of U.S President J.F. Kennedy through the lens of the news cycle."

Warhol’s Flash Portfolio is comprised of eleven screenprints, published in 1963. Combining colour prints, colophon and teletype text on paper, the portfolio is a visually striking exploration of the assassination of U.S President J.F. Kennedy through the lens of the news cycle. Flash was a contemporary art magazine, still in print today, known for publishing works by avant-garde artists.

One of Warhol’s foremost artistic concerns was of the news cycle and media circus surrounding tragic events. Perhaps no event in the artist’s lifetime better exemplified this than J.F Kennedy’s death. In this series he carefully manipulates images and text from the news in a multitude of colourways. The low contrast on the prints give resemble negatives, creating a somewhat ghostly impression. Warhol stated of the event: ‘It seemed no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t get away from the thing’.

Warhol’s counterpoint to the Flash portfolio is his moving portrayal of grief in his Jackie Kennedy I, II and III series. These powerful portraits explore pain, suffering and group and serve as a solemn testimony to the effects of the assassination which shattered the American Dream.
