Andy Warhol Frederick Weisman (F & S II.123) For Sale

Frederick Weisman is a screenprint produced by Warhol in 1975 of prominent businessman and art collector Frederick Weisman.  

Warhol has reappropriated a black and white image of Frederick, creating a colourful collage and rotating the image itself to create a kaleidoscopic effect. Interestingly the artist also plays with the transparency of the image, with the green block of colour still allowing us to see the subject’s face. 

Frederick Weisman was a very successful entrepreneur who had founded Mid-Atlantic Toyota in 1970. Aside from his business ventures, him and his wife Marcia were avid collectors of modern and contemporary art. That Warhol produced portraits of them both is a testament to the society that Warhol found himself a part of as a successful artist in the 70s, as well as the wider art scene. The artist was undoubtedly interested in commercialisation, and like everything else, art was subject to this as art itself was a commodity.
