    Meaning & History
Warhol's portrait of president Jimmy Carter's mother, Lillian, is a testament to the close relationship he formed with his portrait sitters, even when producing work for comission.

Lillian Carter is a screenprint created by the artist in 1977, of nurse and mother of President Jimmy Carter, Lillian.

This print is amongst Warhol’s most colourful collage-style portraits, fragmenting each of Lillian’s features. The artist’s blocks of colour were created by using Colour aid sheets: simple artists papers in a variety of colours that were layered on top of his images.

The portrait can be seen as part of a larger series in which Warhol produced three portraits of Lillian’s son, Jimmy, for his Presidential campaign. On Lillian’s chest a badge, bearing her son’s portrait, is visible and a nod to his political pursuits. Though Lillian was herself from a humble background, Warhol’s decision to draw her marks the informal relationship he formed with his subjects even whilst producing for commission.
