Andy Warhol Mammy (F & S II. 262)
Meaning & HistoryThis figure is well-known from Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery book Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) and Victor Fleming’s Civil War drama Gone With the Wind (1939); Warhol's portrayal highlights its problematic past.
Warhol depicts Mammy, a stereotypical African-American figure in literature and film, with bold and expressive lines. Originating from the Southern United States in the 19th century, Mammy embodies a harmful stereotype of Black women as submissive and nurturing caregivers. This caricature, which has gained widespread popularity across various media platforms, both obscures the harsh realities of slavery and racial prejudice and perpetuates a romanticised vision of the antebellum South. The figure is notably featured in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) and Victor Fleming’s Civil War drama Gone With the Wind (1939). Warhol’s portrayal serves to underscore the troubling legacy associated with this figure.
In Warhol's depiction, Mammy is portrayed with emerald and turquoise eyes set against a stark black background. Her large yellow hoop earrings catch the light, providing a focal point in the otherwise sombre composition. The image gains additional vibrancy from a crimson headband and matching red lips. The figure is rendered in subdued, gestural lines and contrasts with the simple black backdrop, causing Mammy to blend into the shadows. This approach contrasts with Warhol's other works, such as The Witch and The Shadow, where vibrant characters are set against equally vivid backgrounds. For this piece, Warhol chose Sylvia Williams, former head of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution, to model as Mammy. View Warhol’s complete Myths portfolio.
