Andy Warhol Marcia Weisman (F & S II.122)Meaning & History
His work of this period was highly focused on portraiture, with David Bourdon remarking at the time, ‘Warhol’s art and social life have meshed indissolubly.’
Marcia Weisman is a screenprint produced by Warhol in 1975 of art collector and wife of businessman Frederick Weisman. This rare work comes from an edition of 10.
This portrait transforms a black and white photograph of Marcia into a powerful and lively collage, typical of Warhol’s portraits in the 70s. The rectangular blocks of colour also appear in the artist’s portrait of her husband, Frederick Weisman, and of Paloma Picasso from 1974.
Marcia was a very influential figure in the art world, helping to found the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and donating works from her collection to the National Gallery of Art. In this portrait Warhol is paying homage to the artistic scene of which he is a key part: by the seventies, he had experienced meteoric fame. His work of this period was highly focused on portraiture, with David Bourdon remarking at the time, ‘Warhol’s art and social life have meshed indissolubly.’
