    Meaning & History

“The more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel."

Among Warhol’s most well-known artistic creations are his portraits of actress Marilyn Monroe. The portfolio is a perfect representation of Warhol’s distinctive style and the ideas that inspired him. The Marilyn Monroe portfolio had a significant role in the popularisation of pop art. Warhol essentially doubles Monroes status as a mainstay of visual art and entertainment with this screenprint. This black, white, and grey version of Marilyn’s portrait contrasts greatly with the fluorescent, surreal colours of the other prints. The black and white tones are reminiscent of watching the actress on the silver screen, alluding to her Hollywood starlet status and her unattainability. Monroe was untouchable to the masses, the only interaction one could have with her was by watching her on the big screen. However, it could be argued that the black and white also acts as a morose reminder to the Monroe’s passing. The series was created a few years after her death in 1962. In the immediate aftermath of her tragic death, he created the Marilyn Diptych, a diptych plastered with a repeating image of Monroe, gradually fading with each repeated image of her in black and white ink. His first experimentation with Marilyn’s image was a memorial to honour the Hollywood icon, but she continued to become the perfect muse for Warhol. In turn, this portrait immortalised her forever.

This could be a suggestion that Warhol was more interested in the real women behind the façade of a Hollywood status, in the suffering they endured, but simultaneously the way the masses glamourised their suffering. She became even more of a star within death. The series is a satire of society’s obsession with celebrity culture, fame, and consumerism. However, this could be seen as Warhol being somewhat self-critical, as he himself was a person who was also after the immortal fame, like that of Marilyn, of stars he idolised. As an icon of American entertainment, her life represented a sacred intersection of beauty, fame, and death.
