    Meaning & History

“The more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel."

Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe portfolio has become the pinnacle and most quintessential symbol of the Pop art movement. This screenprint perfectly encapsulates the immortal Marilyn Monroe in all of Warhol’s vibrant, pop art grandeur. The screenprint repurposes a portrait of Marilyn taken from a publicity still for her 1953 film Niagara. The use of this photo sparked controversy, as it raised questions about artistic appropriation and the extent to which one can reuse a public image before it becomes an issue of copyright. Warhol bathes her portrait in a myriad of gaudy reds, greens, and pinks. The façade of a Hollywood legend is transformed into something even more superficial and carefully constructed. The incorporation of famous stars in Pop Art became one of the most recognisable features of the movement, offering a satirical commentary on the media’s obsession with the famous and beautiful.

To Warhol, Monroe was not just a glamourous film star, but an embodiment of society’s cult of celebrity. The closely cropped portrait of Marilyn mirrors that of religious icons, perhaps Warhol is commenting on the mythical, saint-like qualities that are inadvertently assigned to celebrities such as Marilyn. In turn, this status causes the average person to see celebrities through the same iconoclastic gaze of holiness and immortality. This is especially emphasised as the series was created shortly after Monroe’s death. As time goes on, and Marilyns portrait remains frozen in time, Warhol transforms Monroe into a martyr of a lost golden age.
