    Meaning & History

“The more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel."

A print from Andy Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe portfolio from 1967, Marilyn (F. & S. II.29) is an unmatched visual explosion of repetition and colour. It depicts a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, the iconic Hollywood actress, with her hair and eyelids both brilliant orange and the same vivid turquoise colour as the background surrounding her. Marilyn Monroe was portrayed by Warhol in 23 paintings shortly after her untimely death in 1962. The paintings were based on a publicity photo from the 1953 movie Niagara, which had been cropped to highlight the actress's features further. This print is a reprint of the same image, with her face turned to her right and her lips parted sensually while flashing a smile at the viewer. Marilyn (F. & S. II.29) uses black ink overlaid on the image's upper surface to produce colour oppositions and strong contrasts that are extremely striking and eye-catching.

Often regarded as the founder of Pop Art, Andy Warhol was a prominent member of the movement. Born in 1928, Warhol let twentieth-century popular culture influence his artistic direction. By fusing high art and mass consumption, the artist questioned what was deemed to be art, whether it was through the portrayal of glamorous public icons like Marilyn Monroe or the commonplace Campbell's Soup Can. Warhol's favourite method of screen printing, which allowed for the reproduction of pictures in several colourways, furthered his fixation with mass culture and made art more approachable for the masses.
