    Meaning & History

“The more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel."

Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of Pop Art, instantly recognizable in all her glitzy, brilliant magnificence. It is a colourful and kitsch depiction of the actress Marilyn Monroe that has come to represent popular culture of the late 20th century. The series is a prime example of Warhol's avant-garde printmaking method, which he discovered was most appropriate for his goal of reflecting the symbols and commodities of popular culture at that particular time.

Fame, glamour, and beauty were among the factors that shaped Andy's artistic philosophy, along with mechanical production and the contemporary marvels of industrial society. Whether he was painting Kellog's Corn Flakes, soup cans or famous people like Mick Jagger and Liz Taylor, pop culture and his peculiar perspectives on the American industrial world were his main subjects. Two weeks after Marilyn's passing, Warhol decided to paint her; the image's recurrence alludes to mass production and the media's profiling of her after her death. Warhol's main concern was the dehumanizing aspects of celebrity society; possibly by drawing attention to these, he was trying to get the audience to think about the person behind the picture. Religious iconography benefits from the image repetition as well. Saints and martyrs are commonly painted at a similar scale and with great regularity, maybe making a statement about how Hollywood stars are now more frequently revered than traditional religious symbols.
