Andy Warhol Merce Cunningham (F & S II.124)Meaning & History
Merce Cunningham explores the intersection between art and dance, portraying a prolific dancer known for breaking down conventions of choreography.
Merce Cunningham is a screenprint produced in 1974, portraying the dancer Mere Cunningham. This is a special work due to it being printed on Japanese gift wrapping paper, the only time the artist was to use this material.
As a dancer, Mere Cunningham was known for breaking down typical conventions of the art form: he often choreographed dances without music. In line with his love for conceptualism, Mere Cunningham balancing forward and holding onto a chair behind him. His graceful, lean poise gives the image a sculptural quality, and fittingly the artist has focused on Mere’s body rather than face. The floral overlay given to the image by the gift wrapping paper further instils a delicateness to the print.
Mere Cunningham was commissioned to raise funds for Cunningham’s dance company.
