    Meaning & History
"Being good in business is the best kind of art," is epitomised in the Ads series.

Through his use of pop art to both celebrate and implicitly criticise the pervasive nature of advertisement, Warhol's Ads portfolio perfectly captures his brand. The artwork features classic and luxurious Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle together with 80s-inspired trademarks of more ordinary items, like Mobilgas, Apple and Volkswagen. The series gives otherwise unremarkable yet legendary ads a higher artistic stature. That sums up the core idea of modern art: "I could do that, but I didn't," a recurring motif in Warhol's work, elevating everyday objects in to works of art.

Andy Warhol's screen print Mobilgas, printed in 1985, embodies the artist's obsession with American commercialism. The Mobilgas emblem is depicted in the print as a white sign against a blue background. In the central print, the fabled winged horse Pegasus's scarlet body contrasts with vibrant yellow and orange gestural lines. The Greek mythological creature's body is highlighted by the colour contrast, which draws the viewer's attention to it. In contrast to the flat form of Warhol's early, more "mechanic," prints, such the Campbell's Soup series, this approach gives the screen print more dimension and physical presence. The Mobil print depicts the commonplace yet essential trip to the petrol station, which is recognised and done by all Americans. This print depicts a more reachable kind of consumer good, rather than extravagant products like Volkswagen cars or Chanel perfume.

In Warhol's Ads, well-known symbols, companies, films, and individuals are shamelessly appropriated while paying homage to his background as a commercial illustrator. Advertisements and posters that were already captivating are enhanced with additional colour and personality, but at a higher cost and status, making the collection both accessible to a wider audience yet out of reach for the majority of people. One of Warhol's most well-known assertions, "Being good in business is the best kind of art," is epitomised in the Ads series.
