    Meaning & History
his print's vivid and striking colours capture Warhol's love of popular culture and his ability to elevate commonplace objects into works of art.

In this bold, bright and brash print, Warhol depicted American icon James Dean for his Ads portfolio, printed in 1985. In this series, Warhol replicated American consumer culture icons with vibrant, rich colours. The series harks back to Warhol’s origins as a commercial illustrator, linking fine art with commercialism. By transforming everyday ads into art, Warhol challenges the traditional boundaries of art and redefines the role of the artist within a commercialised society.

Warhol depicts the iconic American actor James Dean’s character from the film Rebel without a Cause in a cartoon-like style, as he leans against a wall with his hand in his pocket. Warhol draws the figure twice, as it seems to fade behind the first. Alongside the figures is a series of Japanese text, serving as a visual reminder of the universality of media consumption and glorification, moving away from Warhol’s usual depiction of American consumerism and commodification. This print's vivid and striking colours capture Warhol's love of popular culture and his ability to elevate commonplace objects into works of art. Rebel Without a Cause was sure to appeal to Warhol’s search for artistic inspiration, as it explores themes of the facade of the American dream, morality and the anarchy of youth alongside the normalcy of day-to-day American suburban life.

Through his Ads series, Warhol explores the ‘in-your-face’ nature of advertising imagery, whilst making it bigger, bolder, and brighter. Warhol’s takes symbols, logos and even celebrities that have become associated with American consumerism, and transforms this ‘low’ art into a powerful and new kind of visual culture. By transforming everyday advertisements into art, Warhol challenges the traditional boundaries of art and redefines the role of the artist within a commercialised society.
