    Meaning & History
The cartoon-like illustration of the movie's star, James Dean, to the composition's right, demonstrates Warhol's artistic expression and background as an illustrator.

In this bold, bright and brash print, Warhol depicted American icon James Dean for his Ads portfolio, printed in 1985. In this series, Warhol replicated American consumer culture icons with vibrant, rich colours. It is evident that Warhol's early work in New York as a commercial illustrator served as the inspiration for this series.

The cartoon-like illustration of the movie's star, James Dean, to the composition's right, demonstrates Warhol's artistic expression and background as an illustrator. A nearly similar second illustration, fading as if it were a phantom of the character's conscience that he battles with throughout the old movie, is set behind him. The film's investigation of morality with the extra star power of major Hollywood leads, centred upon youths lost in anarchy and parent-child struggles, was sure to appeal to Warhol and his fondness for the American dream—and all of the flaws in its dazzling facade. This print's vivid and striking colours capture Warhol's love of popular culture and his ability to elevate commonplace objects into works of art. In fact, Warhol was a trailblazer whose work greatly aided in the erasure of distinctions between high and low culture, which eventually came to define the postmodern movement of the late 20th century. Warhol's use of the Japanese poster's aesthetic serves as a visual reminder of the universality of media consumption and glorification, even though a large portion of his body of work concentrates on American consumerism.

Through his Ads series, Warhol resurrects the most famous trademarks, emblems, and logos while addressing the subliminal impact of glitzy packaging and household names on American consumption behaviours. The portfolio's main focus is on pop culture and how branded imagery helps a star get even more notoriety. Warhol was interested in examining the connection between art and business. He saw commercials as pervasive and powerful examples of visual culture that might be honoured through the arts. Warhol challenges the status of established art forms and the place of the artist in a commercial culture by re-creating these everyday commercials as works of art.
